1. The author foreshadowed Piggy's death when he described Piggy on the edge of the cliff ,hanging onto a rock, crying out for Ralph because he couldn't see. It was also foreshadowed when the author kept giving descriptions of Roger on the cliff with his hand on a lever. That hint kind of told the reader that someone would get hurt from the new lever contraption.
2. I think the author decided to have Roger kill Piggy because when he dies it's like the voice of reason dying, and all of them going savage. Also, the author might have wanted to show that not just Jack has gone savage and crazy, but all of the boys. The boys all decided to go along with Jack and his new power as "chief".
3. When Samneric are protesting out of the heart of civilization, they are simply protesting against the savagery of Jack's tribe. They believe that Ralph and Piggy have the superior tribe because of their common sense and their hope for rescue. Samneric want to have an organized civilization and not be stuck in a tribe that has its main focus on hunting.
4. It symbolizes that Ralph believes that he will always be the leader of the boys on the island. We do believe that Ralph thinks that he could get Jack to agree with his ideas and thoughts. I think that to Ralph, the conch is still the main source of power. Although, it is not the main source of power to the other boys. This is why Jack does not cooperate with Ralph.
5. Jack did not challenge Ralph at the end of the book because they are saved by Ralph's idea. The officer saw the smoke and fire, and came to rescue the boys. Jack realizes at this point in the book that Ralph was right all along and that he was not fit to be the leader of the boys.
6. At the end of the book when Jack and his tribe are chasing Ralph he is saved by a military figure on the beach. He saw the smoke and fire, then decided to rescue them. In the beginning Ralph was focused on building a fire and having a smoke signal to have them rescued. It is ironic that his life is saved by the same thing that was supposed to rescue them in the beginning.
7. I think that the author chose to have all of the characters be boys because it would make the story more interesting. The boys have so many conflicts between power, hunting, and rescue. This causes many conflicts between relationships and fear, that it makes for a very intriguing plot. If all of the characters would have girls, the plot of the story would have been very different. Hunting would not have been an issue between them, and they would have kept one tribe together. Another thing that would have been different between girls is that there would not have been anyone ruling by fear. This is what would have been different between girls and boys as the characters.
8. In the beginning of the book, the boys main fear is the fact that there are no adults on the island to tell them what to do. The fear of the beast is also starting to form. In the very end of the book, everyone is afraid of Jack and his tribe. He is ruling by fear and has killed Simon and Piggy. Also in the end of the book the fear of the beast grows tremendously.
